Fridge Not Cooling? The 8 Most Common Causes (Toronto Technician Breakdown)

Why Do Fridges Stop Cooling?

As appliance technicians we come across questions like this often. Why is it happening and how could I have prevented it from happening?

From what we see day in and day out in Toronto, here are the Eight Most Common Causes for why your fridge is failing:

  • Dirty condenser coils - A simple maintenance fix that can save you lots of money if done properly and on time.

  • Evaporator fan that's gone bad - Lack of air flow causing the cool air circulating evenly through your refrigerator.

  • Condenser fan that's stopped working - Overheated compressors tend to fail very faster than you think.

  • A faulty thermostat or board - Imagine a fridge that lost its reading glasses trying to understand what he is reading at the moment. No thermostat = No accurate temperature reading.

  • Blocked vents or airflow issues - Never overload your fridge and make sure you do not block sensors and air flow openings to allow smooth operation of your appliance

  • A broken start relay  - A faulty start relay will not allow your compressor to keep that cooling running.

  • Door gasket that's damaged - a broken door gasket can cause your freezer to ice up and block the same airflows we mentioned earlier.

  • Sealed system issues - A sealed system or compressor failure basically means the “engine” of your fridge can’t move the refrigerant that makes everything cold. When this happens, the fridge might still turn on, but it just won’t cool down no matter what you try.

Let me walk you through some steps you can do before calling Best Appliance Repairs of Toronto:

Step 1: Clean The Condenser Coils

Your condenser coils help your fridge get rid of excess heat. When they're filled with dust, dirt, or pet hair (we see pet hair very pretty often) the coating makes it so much harder for the unit to lose that heat. The compressor starts overheating - your fridge stops cooling.

Unplug your fridge and carefully pull it away (make sure to protect your floors before) and with a brush or a vacuum carefully clean the condenser coils (In some models you will need to unscrew a back cover that covers your fridges system). Reconnect and test for a few hours to make sure the fridge is up and running again.

Step 2: Blocked Air Vents or Airflow Issues

Your fridge needs clear pathways for cold air to travel from the freezer to the fridge compartment. If you've got containers blocking the vents or shelves crammed too full, temperatures can shoot up really quickly.

Give this a shot: Move stuff away from the vents (usually at the back) and try not to overpack your shelves. Make sure nothing's pressed right up against the back wall.

Step 3: Restart your fridge manually

Today's market is full of refrigerators running with complex electronics that tend to malfunction. Try shutting the fridge from its breaker, have the breaker off for 5-10 minutes before turning it on again, in some cases it will resolve the issue temporarily which is a good indicator something might be off with one of the electronic components in your fridge.
