Why Your Blomberg Freezer Keeps Icing Up in Your Toronto Condo

Bloomberg Refrigerator Issues with Defrosting

Living in a Toronto condo? Your condo is most likely equipped with top quality built in Blomberg fridge freezer. They are usually great machines - beautifully made and integrated with the rest of your kitchen while staying efficient and quiet (most of the time). Occasionally any winning horse can have a bad day or two.

Let’s walk through the number one issue we see with Blomberg fridges in Toronto condos.

So, Why Is There Ice Building Up in the Freezer?

A lot of Blomberg bottom-freezer models tend to collect frost and ice built up behind the back panel of the freezer. The root cause usually isn’t airflow but more so a defrosting issue.

What’s likely happening behind that icy buildup:

  • The defrost heater isn’t turning on when it should

  • The thermistor isn’t reading temperatures accurately

  • The control board isn’t sending the right signals

When your defrost system fails, frost begins to collect around the evaporator coil.

From there:

  • The fan starts hitting the ice and makes aloud buzzing or grinding noise

  • Cold air can’t circulate properly

  • Melted ice can start leaking out onto your floor

  • Temperature inside both the fridge and freezer start to rise

  • In some cases the Ice will block the door from closing properly and sealing the freezer

These issues might be hard to spot right away, but with the right guidance you can prevent any further damage to your fridge, kitchen floors and cabinets.

Why Defrosting Feels Like a DIY Win (But Isn’t a Long-Term Fix)

Most troubleshooting guides will redirect you to the simplest fix in the book - lay some towels on the floor, unplug the fridge from power and leave the door open for the melted ice to drain.

However, this is just a temporary fix and it won’t solve the underlying issue that caused the freezer to ice up in the first place.

A Few Things You Can Try on Your Own

Before you do anything else, here are a few simple steps to give yourself some temporary relief and maybe gather helpful clues in the process:

  • Unplug the fridge and leave the freezer doors open for a limited time (an hour or two and just in cases you’ve got a very noisy fan so you can get some relief of the noise)

  • Clean up any excess water from the floor or shelves

  • Make sure food isn’t blocking the air vents inside the fridge or freezer

  • Avoid overpacking the fridge since cool air needs space to move around

  • Most importantly, video record the noise - before defrosting

That last one can be a game-changer if you ever need to explain the issue later.
