Gas Stove Burner Won’t Light or Keeps Clicking?

It’s one of the most common calls we get: you turn the knob, hear the igniter click… click… click… and nothing lights. Or it lights on one burner but not another. Most causes are simple and safe to check — but gas deserves respect, so let’s start there.
⚠ Safety first. If you smell gas (a rotten-egg odour) and it doesn’t clear quickly, do not try to light the burner or use any switches. Turn off the stove, open a window, leave, and call your gas utility’s emergency line or 911. The checks below assume there is no gas smell.
Why is the igniter clicking but not lighting?
That clicking is the spark igniter doing its job — it just isn’t lighting the gas. Nine times out of ten it’s one of these:
1. A dirty or clogged burner
Spilled food, grease, or boil-overs clog the tiny flame ports around the burner head, so gas can’t get out evenly and won’t catch. This is the #1 cause and the easiest fix.
2. A wet or misaligned burner cap
After cleaning or a spill, the burner cap can be left off-centre or still damp. If it isn’t seated correctly, the spark can’t reach the gas.
3. A worn or wet igniter
The igniter needs to be dry and in good shape to spark. Right after cleaning, moisture can stop it — and over years, igniters simply wear out.
Safe checks you can do yourself
With the burner off and cool
- Clean the burner. Lift off the grate, cap, and burner head. Clear the little flame ports with a straightened paperclip or toothbrush — never something that could snap off inside. Wipe away grease.
- Dry everything fully. If you just cleaned the stovetop, moisture is often the whole problem. Let the parts air-dry completely.
- Reseat the cap. Put the burner cap back squarely and centred — it should sit flat with no wobble.
- Watch the spark. In a dim kitchen, turn the knob to “Light” and look. A weak, yellow, or absent spark points to the igniter or its wiring.
- Test the other burners. If only one is out, the problem is that burner. If all of them click but won’t light, it’s more likely the igniter module or gas supply.
When it’s time to call a technician
Call a pro if, after cleaning and drying:
- All burners click but none light — often a faulty spark module or igniter switch.
- The flame is weak, uneven, or orange/yellow — a healthy gas flame is mostly blue; this points to a gas-flow or air-mixture problem.
- The burner lights then goes out when you release the knob — on many stoves that means a failing safety valve or thermocouple.
- You smell gas at any point, or the igniter sparks even when the knob is off.
