A Samsung fridge that stops cooling is stressful — food is on the line and the clock is ticking. The good news: most “not cooling” problems come down to a handful of causes, and a few you can rule out yourself in five minutes.

First, figure out what isn’t cooling
The pattern points straight at the cause:
- Fridge warm, freezer still cold — usually airflow or a defrost problem, not a dead compressor. This is the most common Samsung complaint and often very fixable.
- Both fridge and freezer warm — points more toward the compressor, the start relay, or a sealed-system (refrigerant) issue.
- Cooling on and off — often a defrost cycle or sensor problem.
Quick checks you can safely do yourself
No tools needed — try these first
- Check for Cooling Off / Demo Mode. Samsung fridges have a mode that stops cooling (often shown as “OF F” on the display) — a surprisingly common cause after a power flicker. Your manual shows the button combo to turn it off (often Energy Saver + Fridge, or Power Cool + Power Freeze held a few seconds).
- Give it breathing room. Pull the fridge an inch off the wall and clear any food blocking the interior vents so cold air can circulate.
- Check the door seals. Warm, humid air leaking past a worn gasket makes the fridge run constantly and still stay warm.
- Clean the condenser coils. Dusty coils (back or underneath) make the fridge work harder and cool less. A gentle vacuum is the most-skipped bit of fridge maintenance.
Give it up to 24 hours. After clearing vents, cleaning coils, or turning off Demo Mode, let the fridge recover for a full day before deciding it’s broken.
Common causes that need a technician
Frozen evaporator coil / defrost failure
Behind the freezer back panel is the evaporator coil. If the defrost heater, sensor, or control fails, that coil ices into a solid block — air can’t pass through, so the fridge slowly warms while the freezer stays cold. A tell-tale sign: the fridge cools better for a day after you unplug it (the ice melts), then warms up again. This is one of the most common Samsung issues, and it’s repairable.
Evaporator fan motor
That fan pushes cold air from the freezer into the fridge compartment. If it fails or gets blocked by ice, the fridge warms up — you’ll sometimes hear a loud buzzing or a fan that stops and starts.
Start relay or compressor
If both compartments are warm and the fridge is quiet, the compressor may not be starting — often because of an inexpensive failed start relay rather than the compressor itself. Testing tells them apart.
Sealed-system / refrigerant leak
Less common, but if the system has lost refrigerant it can’t cool. This is specialized work that must be done by a licensed technician.

If the fridge is under about 8 years old and the problem is a fan, sensor, defrost heater, or relay, repair is almost always the smart call — those parts cost far less than a new fridge.
